Two Important Events at Our University Within the Environment Week
Our university celebrated the Environment Week with various events. During the workshop event held at the KTU Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Culture and Congress Center, our students created artworks from electronic waste. Ñ©ÀæÊÓƵly, the opening of the Compost Waste Production Unit, established on the Kanuni Campus, was conducted.
The June 5th World Environment Day events provided an important opportunity to raise environmental awareness and adopt sustainability principles. At the program organized by our university to enhance environmental consciousness and promote sustainable waste management, students from various disciplines transformed technological waste into art at the Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Culture and Congress Center. The E-Waste to Art workshop, led by the KTU Zero Waste Coordination and supported by stakeholders such as the Trabzon Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the KTU Environmental Issues Application Research Center, and KTU student clubs, featured 24 students in 8 groups who created imaginative artworks from broken or unused electronic devices. Items such as faulty or obsolete mobile phones, computers, computer parts, household electrical appliances, and adapters were transformed into eco-friendly art pieces through the students' creativity. The artworks produced by the students were evaluated by the organizing committee. Students who participated in the E-Waste to Art workshop and achieved top ranks were awarded certificates of participation and prizes at a ceremony held in the KTU Senate Hall.
Another environmentally protective initiative launched by the Coordination Office of Zero Waste on our university campus was the opening of the Compost Waste Production Unit. The opening ceremony, held on KTU Kanuni Campus with the participation of university administrators and students, emphasized the importance of environmental protection and sustainability principles.
In the Compost Waste Production Unit, modern technology will be used to produce compost from organic waste. This unit will contribute to the production of organic fertilizer, particularly by recycling solid food waste. At the opening ceremony, our Rector, Prof. Dr. Hamdullah Çuvalcı, highlighted the importance of environmental awareness and the need for everyone to live an environmentally conscious life. He also emphasized the significance of youth and education in solving environmental issues. Speaking at the ceremony, Trabzon Provincial Director of Environment and Urbanization UÄŸur Korkmaz noted that the root cause of global environmental problems is rapid population growth. He underscored the importance of waste management and recycling projects, praising Ñ©ÀæÊÓƵ's successful efforts in the Zero Waste initiative.
Our university continues to work towards becoming a leader in sustainability, aiming to leave a clean environment for future generations.
